Australian-made dramas are a rare thing - and now they're even rarer.

The Nine Network has announced that home-grown series McLeod's Daughters will wrap up in 2008 after eight seasons on the air.

Posie Graeme-Evans, creator and executive producer of the drama, explained that she has "always maintained that the series should finish on a high, and while it was still loved by the audience".

Nine CEO David Gyngell added that the network is "extremely proud" of the drama and what it's achieved during its long run on the air.

Based on a '90s telemovie of the same name, McLeod's Daughters premiered in 2001 and quickly established itself as a television favourite. The series launched the careers of actors such as Bridie Carter and Lisa Chappell, scored multiple Logie nominations, and has been seen in 200 countries.

Nine will reportedly shift its focus to other drama series, including a second season of Sea Patrol and a remake of the Aussie classic Young Doctors.

The final season of McLeod's is currently in production and will air on Nine in early 2008. Fans can watch all their favourite episodes of the series via Catch-Up TV.
